9/1 Draft: Biggest Villain vs. BC

Today, we are going to draft BC's top Villains!
As the Joker is to Batman, as Cobra is to GI JOE , and is SPY is to SPY..
We are looking for the worst of the worst, in relation to Boston College.

Today Wesley gets to start it off..

1W) TOB (Tom O'Brien)

Ok, Mike ,I know what you are going to say...There isn't enough history.. Or leave TOBy alone..

But I just can't.. They stand for everything I don't like.. and moreover, everything not BC..

Tom O' Brien...

He left BC for a chance at a Big "State" school, well there you go ..NC State have at it.. and enjoy. I wonder if that same ceiling of wins exists for him wherever he goes
Yes TOB took us out of a hard time at BC, but I feel the way he left, created a lot of rage in the hearts of the BC fans. And those images in the rear view still appears closer than they are.

2M) Diamond Ferri

Wesley, I think TOB has created this "villain" thing for himself. I really do. While I very much appreciate what he did at BC, he did in fact reach a ceiling and BC allowed him to interview at six (6!) different schools before he finally landed another gig south of the Mason-Dixon line. What rubs be the wrong way about TOB (among other things) were his unnecessary pot-shots he took against the school on his way out stating how tough it was to win at BC and how nine wins was the most anyone could ever to at Boston College. He also dredged up the gambling scandal at every possible moment to paint himself as a savior (and dragging us through the mud in the process). He's not my number one villain, but he's certainly positioned himself well for the role.

On to my pick: Diamond Ferri: I still cringe every time I hear this name.

BC's made a habit out of turning two star guys into NFL players. Finding the diamond in the rough. Making all-stars out of three stars.

Every now and again you miss one, too.

Diamond Ferri, a native son of Massachusetts played for Everett High School (much like current players Jimmy Noel and Isaac Johnson), and wanted nothing more than to go to Boston College to play his college ball.

Boston College, however, was not interested. Not as a running back, anyway. That's where Ferri wanted to be.

Syracuse told him he could compete for the job, but no guarantees. He competed, but lost out to future 2nd team All-American Walter Reyes. Ferri was an outstanding safety for the Orangemen throughout his career.

Until November 27th, 2004.

This was Boston College's last game as a member of the BigEast. The conference was under heavy scrutiny as Miami and Virginia Tech has left the year before, and Boston College was on the way out the door. The conference still had an auto-BCS birth despite only having seven teams...something that caused a ton of controversy at the time.

Boston College was in the driver's seat. All they had to do was beat a lowly Syracuse team that was 5-5, but had just lost their heart and soul, the only true talent on the team, Walter Reyes.

BC had to deal with injuries, too. Paul Petersen, who had unexpectedly turn into a fantastic quarterback for the Eagles broke his wrist (if memory serves) the week prior and were forced to play Red-Shirt Frosh Matt Ryan.

Matt had a lot of great games as the QB for BC. This was not one of them. But I digress, back to the point of why Diamond Ferri is MY #1 villain.

Walter Reyes was out, but the Orangemen didn't want to remove any of the red shirts from their players as they were pretty certain they were going to be thumped by a very good BC team. What did Paul Pasqualoni do for his 2nd to last game as head football coach at Syracuse?

He put in Diamond Ferri, told him to play both ways. As a BC fan, I had to laugh. Thank god. I was worried how we would do without Petersen. But now that Reyes was out and there was no running game, this should be a blood bath.

So how would a safety do at RB? How about one that actually had to PLAY safety during a game in addition to now playing "out of position"? A player that would have to play nearly every down in a game against a far superior opponent that just needed this one win to go to a BCS bowl game??

141 yards, 2 TD's. One INT, returned for a TD. I don't even want to know how many tackles.

Diamond Ferri personally took BC's best chance of a BCS bowl game and crapped on it.

3W) LNH ("Long Neck Heather", aka "Heather Dinich")

Mike, I feel you on that call.. And everytime that game is brought up , it's a dagger in the heart of most BC fans.

Let me start with saying.. Her job is to blog/report on the ACC, THAT IS ALL.
But somehow , someway she is incapable of saying much at all about BC that is positive..

Seriously, check it out right now.Top ten ACC Games ok.. now look throughout her blog, and notice all things BC seemed to be overlooked.. this top ten ACC games is just a small snipet, but there are NO BC games? Really? Like Clemson/BC wouldn't be a crowd pleaser? A game that has gone into OT repeatedly in the past few years. Or Notre Dame/ BC, wrapping up a series of ."Holy War" which is currently tied at 9-9

Yes, I will be the first to admit, I am biased, but if you really look deep into her work.. you will find nothing but dust particles on BC.

4M) Ed Reed

I couldn't agree more about LNH. Her dislike and ignorance of all things Boston College may only be matched by her open dissatisfaction with having to cover the lowly ACC.

For me, this whole Ed Reed thing is personal. It was my first year at BC (grad school) and the Eagles were playing hated Miami. Now, I've always supported BC as both my Mom and Aunt are alumnae, but I wasn't nearly the die-hard I am prior to coming to The Heights. I have, however, always hated Miami. I got it from my Dad--certainly not one of the worst things a boy could inherit.

Anyway, BC was actually in the game with Miami, and Miami was ranked WAY high, I forgot how high, but posssibly #1. Miami was leading up 11-7, but BC was driving. St. Pierre had driven the Eagles down inside the Red Zone!

I had gotten tickets from a scalper and wound up on the visitor's side, but GREAT seats, a couple rows up, right at the 20!!
The crowd was going nuts, BC was about to beat Miami for the first time since '84, and dash their national championship hopes at the same time!! Only 20 seconds to go!!!!

Then it happened.

St. Pierre threw a bullet from about four yards away, attempting to remove one of our WR's kneecaps for reasons only he knows. The maximum velocity that St. Pierre put on the ball was evident when it ricocheted off of the BC player's knee, popped up into the air and was caught by Walters (had to look that up) and Reed. Ed Reed then stripped the ball away from Walters and gallivanted 90 some odd yards for the touchdown with less than 15 seconds remaining in the game.

I still remember seeing the back of his jersey as he ran away with the best chance BC had to beat Miami in years.

On a related side note, that 2001 Miami team might be the most NFL-laden CFB team of all time. Here are some of the guys on the '01 Canes roster: Willis McGahee, Najeh Davenport, Andre Johnson, Antrel Rolle, Mike Rumph, Ken Dorsey, DJ Williams, Ed Reed, Clinton Portis, Phillip Buchanan, Frank Gore, Rocky McIntosh, Johnathan Vilma, Vince Wilford, Bryant McKinnie, Kellen Winslow, Roscoe Parrish, Jeremy Shockey, William Joseph, Jerome McDougle, and the late Sean Taylor.

And BC almost beat 'em.

5W) Big East

Listen.. we are happy in the ACC, I promise . I am getting sick of hearing that the BC faithful have desire to be back in the BIG EAST!
It couldn't be further from the truth.
What do you want us to beat up on Rutgers and UCONN some more?
Didn't that get a little old the first time.. oh here is another one , we want to play in more local bowls. HA! no, we prefer to play where it is warmer, the competition is better, and there is more publicity.
To say that BC and The Big East's seperation was like a difficult divorce, would be a wild understatement. But BC wants no alimony, will pay no child support, and will be delivering no congical visits.

Bon Voyage Bitches!

6M) Lou Holtz

In 1992, Lou figured it was a good time to run up the score on Boston College, going as far as to fake a punt late in the game and up numerous TD's. The final score was 54-7, Notre Dame.

The following year, ND had it's eyes on the MNC having just defeated Florida State (a #1 vs. #2 battle that had been billed as "The Game of the Century"), needing only to beat lowly BC, a team they had embarrassed the year before.

Fuck you, Lou Holtz.

David Gordon's 41 yard kick beat the Fake Irish 41-39, killing Lou's MNC hopes (and giving Florida State a shot at the title, something that Bobby Bowden later referenced by scheduling BC as it's first ACC opponent because "I owe them some money").

Ever since then, Lou has been blathering in a style which can only be described as "trying to talk with a mouth full of peanut M&M's" about how awful BC is every opportunity he gets. Part of the blame goes to ESPN for giving this ponce a soap box to stand on, for sure.
My favorite Lou Holtz prediction was for the 2007 season. Lou said that BC was one of the most over-rated teams in College Football, saying that BC had lost TOB and would win only three games at the most.

Hey, he was only off by 8.

7W) Boston Pro Teams. RedSox, Celtics, Bruins,Pats

Now don't get me wrong.. I love these teams.. but we are drafting biggest villans here.
And I understand that these teams in ways help BC, and attract new recruits, new fans etc. But overwhelmingly, BC plays second, third fiddle to the news about the pro teams. And I understand that, but in other markets. I.E. Auburn, Gainesville, Iowa City,Clemson to name a few. The NCAA Football team is the only team there.

8M) AP Voters

You know, I agree that Boston is a pro-sports town, but BC's unwillingness to market to the non-BC fan in Boston is part of why I think we don't get the support that other schools do. That being said, it's just a cultural difference of "if I didn't go there, I'm not rooting for them" that only truly exists in the northeast, and Boston specifically.

I'm going with a bit of a cop-out here and saying the AP Voters. Listen, I understand you have to cater to the Oklahoma's, Notre Dame's, USC's, and Texas' of the world to avoid having your house torched by insane fans, but seriously, the complete and total lack of respect year in and year out is just amazing. It simply does not matter what BC does the year before because there will be a perfectly good reason for why BC SOMEHOW managed to surpass the lowly expectations last year and why they're going to be awful and unranked this year.

Rinse, repeat.

It just gets so old. One would think that eventually classical conditioning would take over and the voters would realize that they're habitually under rating Boston College, but these dogs don't answer Pavlov's bell apparently.

9W) BC Kicking Game

Mike , I agree, the AP Voters are hillarious, oh well without the whole being funny thing..

I am glad you posted that link up there.. you would think voters/ media would read that as well, and maybe include that into thier predictions? ehh well maybe not.

I Draft BC Kicking Game.,

Seriously, how can one problem linger for this long?
The BC Kicking game has been very questionable for quite some time now.

And, not just questionable.. downright weird..

Let's start with Ryan Ohliger.. after missing a slew a critical FGs he got "suspended indefinitely"

After that, we got the feel good story of Steve Aponavicious, aka Sid Vicious. The Fan that had a shot to play college ball.. Great Story, just is still going on.. and Sid has been less than perfect over the past couple of years.. Although he seems to be inconsistent, he keeps beating out the competition, and this is actually something I can't totally blame on recruiting either.. as BC got the #1 kicker in the league 2 years ago in Billy Bennett.. Billy may have played in 5 games? But was sidelined with injury, and then off the team shortly after.. Ryan Quigley, and Nate Freese are now on the team, and the hopes are high.. but that once GREAT story of Sid Vicious is still the starting Kicker, does anyone remember that movie groundhog day? it seems very similar..

And , Although I draft this as one of the Biggest Villains, I have a lot of hope for this season in this area.

10M) Mark Blaudshun

David Gordon, where are you? Actually, I miss Sandro Sciortino the most. He was money.

I'm going with the antithesis of the hardest workin' man in show business, Mark Blaudschun. Blauds has painfully been a "beat writer" for Boston College for years while still maintaining his full-fledged love for anything and everything Big East. If it's possible for a story to be spun in a way that's downtrodden, depressing, or miserable for a BC fan, you can count on Blauds to do it.

In addition to being a Big East schill and a BC hater, he's also incredibly lazy. In more than one instance Blaudschun has been caught publishing pieces that are literally copied word for word from fan sites such as Eagle Action and Eagle Insider. To the general public it looks like he's doing his work. To fans that care enough to actually talk about BC sports, we know what a fraud he is.

While it sounds like we hate all media in this piece, let me take a second to call out three terrific BC writers: Steve Conroy of The Boston Herald, Julian Benbow of The Boston Globe, and Jessica Isner of NESN.

Recap:
Wesley - TOB, LNH, BigEast, Boston Pro Teams, BC kicking
BCMike - Ferri, Redd, Holtz, AP, Blaudy

8/31 Draft: Worst & Most Annoying Fans?

Well, this probably won't win us many new friends from the schools and fan bases listed below, but it's time to shine some sunlight on this stink. The draft is on for the WORST of the WORST annoying fans and fan bases.

First up is BCMike...who gets the black-eye of being the first overall pick for worst / most annoying fan base?

1M) West Virginia

Oh, I'm sorry, that's "West BY GOD Virginia" to those of us not native to this Hill-jack state. There's simply nothing rewarding about these
jackasses....unless you really enjoy having your car set on fire after a loss, or their own couches on fire if they win. Known for their painfully low academic "requirements", this may be one of the only teams in college football where the team is undoubtedly more educated than the fans of that team. And that's not a tough level to reach, either.

Let's put aside the sleazy nature of West Virginia's own Rich Rodriguez for a second and look at how the fans reacted when Rich Rod decided to bolt to Michigan:

"His mother, Arleen Rodriguez, told the Charleston Daily Mail her teenage grandson received a death threat and found other harassing notes taped to his locker at East Fairmont High School. Arleen said her 12-year-old granddaughter had to be escorted to classes."

You stay classy, Morgantown. Oh, and thanks for the bottle of urine you just threw, you just hit an old lady and a child. I'm sure they wanted it.

At the end of the day, there's just simply nothing redeeming about West Virginia Fans in any way, shape, or form.

2W) Notre Dame

We Understand.. and we sympathathize with your losses.. all of them, over and over and over and over.. But I just dont understand you delusions. But it must be contagious as other people are starting to believe them as well. You havent won a bowl game in the 2000s? Seriously.. And Lou Holtz.. just shut up.. seriously. no one can understand you anyway, so why waste both of our time? Oh, and please tell me that Weis is an offensive genius, 500 more times.. because I have yet to see the fruit from that.

3M) Ohio State

Truly an excellent call with Notre Dame, Wesley. To be honest, that one somehow slipped my mind. I guess the physical violence that the UWV fans display somehow overshadowed the douchiness of the Notre Dame fans in my mind.

THE Ohio State University fans will tell you how great they are, just give them the chance. After a couple hours of these windbags going on and on you'll eventually blurt out "Oh, wow...so you guys must have won the national championship every year for the past twenty years. Nice job."

What's that Buckeye fans?

You never win the big game? EVER? You just play in a conference of 11 teams so you can escape playing in a conference championship game and slime your way in to the MNC game and get slaughtered again?

Pardon the upcoming poor analogy, but I think it's the fake pride that annoys me the worst. It's like a batter in MLB who manages to get nothing but crappy pitchers to hit against so he manages a .280 average and goes to the All-Star game because SOMEONE has to go from their team...then consequently comes to the plate four times in the All-Star game with the bases loaded...but strikes out whiffing four times.

Then he goes home and tells everyone how great he is because he went to the All-Star game.

To put it more concisely, tOSU fans are USC fans, but louder and without the actual accomplishments.

4W) Tennessee

Tennessee

You just got Lane Kiffin... Go you..

You got a coach that the Raiders thought sucked too much.. so you get a prize.. haha

But it won't matter, you will still have 100,000 screaming crazies going wild on how you deserve the chance, and how to even have a winning record in the SEC is near impossible. Fortunately, for all you swell fans in your BRIGHT orange jerseys , that happen to match your tooth.. I welcome you.

5M) New Jersey State University (aka "Rutgers")

It only took the school that stakes the claim to starting college football 137 years to win their first bowl game. That's not an exaggeration (1869, 2006). If you didn't know of the historic blight on college football that NJSU has
been for well over a century the Jersey faithful would never let you think that this past even exists.

NJSU had a breakout year in 2006 when they played OOC teams like Ohio, Howard, a 3-9 Carolina team and a 2-10 Illinois squad. Tranghese brilliantly scheduled all of the Big East teams that were worth a damn to play each other at the end of the year (you don't drop too much when you lose to a ranked opponent), and NJSU was the main benefactor. This year sadly gave birth to a coterie of Rutgers football fans who deny the existence of college football prior to 2006 and HONESTLY believe their team to be on par with the top programs in college football.

6W) Michigan
Great Choice on NJSU Mike, I couldnt agree more!

Haha.. you have Rich Rod in here now.. and is there a more perfect fit than that?

It seems like there are two type of Michigan fans, passive Michigan fans who dont really follow football, And in your face Michigan fans. I am referring to the in your face Michigan fans. The ones who think the Big 11 is the toughest competition every single year. And they somehow hold a similarity to Notre Dame fans, with a superiority complex

7M) Georgia

Georgia earns a place here because of my personal fan interaction. Now, let it be said that there ARE GOOD GEORGIA FANS, and good Georgia Alums. They're just woefully outnumbered ITP (inside the perimeter, aka what most people consider Atlanta proper).

Georgia has the benefit of having many, MANY "subway" fans much like Notre Dame does. These people have zero connection to UGA in any way, aside from the fact that they live in the state. That's a great thing as far as the school is concerned, but unfortunately when you have so many fans, the quality control standards go way down.

I know I'm being long-winded today, but again pardon me while I recall a true story: My formal introduction to UGA fans here in Atlanta, I arrived in the town about a month prior.

Setting: Taco Mac, Atlanta, GA
Date: Second (?) week of the football season, 2006
Backdrop: Bar is very crowded, first wave of games just ended (including the BC game, which we won), BC folks I'm with and I decide to stay and knock back a couple and catch some more college football.

It's important to note that as the following takes places, my friends and I are literally completely quiet, minding our own business, just nursing our beers and watching the games standing near the bar area.

Random UGA Fan (RUGAF): "Boston College, eh?
BCMike (BCM): "Yep, that's us!"
RUGAF: "Boston COLLEGE???
"
BCM: "Um, yep."
RUGAF: "Y'all in the ACC. The ACC sucks. The SEC is the best."
BCM: "Yep, the SEC is a helluva football conference, no doubt."
RUGAF: "The SEC is so head and shoulders above the ACC, it ain't even funny. Y'all suck."
BCM: "We've got a few teams, but yeah, for sure the SEC has some very good squads."
RUGAF: "Can you imagine *laughs*...I mean, can you IMAGINE what would happen if Boston College played Georgia?"
BCM: *eyebrow lifts*
RUGAF:
"I mean, do you have ANY IDEA of what would happen? Can you even IMAGINE what sort of beating would take place? I mean, honestly, do you have any IDEA what would happen?"
BCM: "Yeah, I've got a pretty good idea, actually."
RUGAF: "Oh yeah *smirking*, what's that?"
BCM: "We'd probably beat your ass again just like we did the last couple of times we played you in bowl games."
RUGAF: "What the f*ck are you talking about?!! BC never played Georgia in a bowl game!!"
BCM: "Yep, sure did."
RUGAF: "Maybe like a hundred years ago or something!!"
BCM: "Try 2001. The other one was in the 80's some time* though, I think."
RUGAF: "You lie! You're a liar. BC sucks, y'all are in the ACC."

* 1986, I had forgotten when at the time

To me, this nicely summarizes the bad UGA fans. If it's not the SEC, it doesn't matter, and UGA is the best in the SEC regardless of any current or historical fact.

8W) Alabama

NEWS FLASH!!!

THE BEAR HAS PASSED!! I hate to be the one that breaks it to you TIDE/Elephant fans..

Alabama and Tennessee have a good amount in common, although I am sure that neither would admit it. I will give credit to Alabama they are playing a lot better lately, and Saban is a good coach.. I guess it just has a lot to do with living in the state.. that makes me hear the fans that much more
Alabama claims 12 National Championships.. if they claim 12.. I claim 5 for BC, I am just sayin'

9M) UCan't (UConn / Connecticut)

Ah, the UCan't fans. If a fan base could ever personify a Napoleon Complex, this is it. BC actually helped the program join the Big East and
pushed for their inclusion a year earlier than expected when Temple got das boot. However, all UCan't fans can say now is how BC is afraid to play them because they're so good (in their own minds, at least). Probably has something to do with not having to play Miami, Virginia Tech, or Boston College every year, Husky fans. UCan't also gets a big boost here because of their shill fan local writer Desmond Conner, who might be the biggest douche on the planet.

10W) Florida

I UNDERSTAND.. Tebow is good.. but seriously you are making me hate this guy, because you won't shut up about him.. let him play his game and be who he is...

Because 2010 will be here before you know it and do I need to remind you of the pre-Spurrier days? I think you will have a reminder soon enough.

RECAP:

BCMike drafted: UWV, tOSU, NJSU, UGA, UCan't.
Wesley drafted: ND, Tennessee, Meat Chicken, 'Bama, Florida.

8/28 Draft: Best FOOTBALL movie?

Sure, you're fine during the fall and early winter when you can turn on the tube or go to any number of college or pro games to get your football fix...but what about the rest of the year? How do you get through it? With the occasional football movie, of course! There have been more than a handful made, some surprisingly good and others just downright painful to watch.

As we begin to put the DVD's away for the better part of the year, what are the best FOOTBALL movies, Wesley?

1W) Necessary Roughness

Necessary Roughness What a great movie.. And I guess having a 25 year old QB on the team makes me appreciate this even more.. but an all time come back/ hard nosed.. we will do what we want kinda movie.. And a HOT girl Kicker.. that goes by the name Kathy Ireland.. I mean who wouldn't like this?

2M) Rudy

I never thought I would say I enjoyed a movie that starred Sinbad and Kathy Ireland, but you're right, it's a guilty pleasure movie I'll watch every time it's on. I think the best part of Necessary Roughness are the quotes I use WAY too often while watching football.

Necessary Roughness (Theatrical Trailer)
Uploaded by NakedBrotha2007. - Check out other Film & TV videos.

1) "Blow the whistle! BLOW! THE! WHISTLE!!" (1:05 mark)

and

2) "Don't throw it to Stonehands!!"

I digress. My pick won't make many BC'ers happy, but I have to say I honestly love this movie. Rudy is just a great story and the movie version is even better. While they took more than a few creative liberties, it's still based on Daniel E. Ruettiger's real life story at Notre Dame. Rudy also features my favorite soundtrack of all time by Jerry Goldsmith. This final scene gives me chills every time.

For a BC guy to admit it how great a movie about a ND football player is, you know it's got to be special.

3W) Varsity Blues
Mike, if you can ever find me a "Rudy was offsides" shirt . I want it ..Although I do admit Rudy was a good story/movie.. I think 2nd pick is a bit high..
My next choice is Varsity Blues...I love this movie.. Great action hits.. You have the pissed off coach forcing cortizone shots into the players, you have the hot teacher, that strips on the side. And you have the average man "Johnny Moxon" being a hero.. who WOULDN'T love this movie?
Mike , do you know how hard it is to NOT put up the whip cream bikini picture here?
I just thought it would make the voting a bit unfair .. haha.

But Tweeter and Billy Bob rounded out the main characters, as I feel like this movie is a Great Depiction of what High School Football is like.

4M) The Waterboy

I'm going with a comedy here: Waterboy. Nothing like watching the newest player on the South West Louisana State Mud Dogs, Bobby Boucher.

5W) Remember the Titans

Good Call on WaterBoy... top 3 of Sandlers movies ever... "Waaaaater Sucks, it really really sucks" comes to mind, repeatedly.. Great movie really!

I have to put Remember the Titans up here.. Heck , I would put them up here on the soundtrack alone.. great music.. good family watching movie.. makes you feel good, And Denzel is the man. Is it gory and gruesome enough? hmm probably not.. but it makes up for it in other areas.

6M) The Longest Yard (1974)

I remember the Titans. Know why? Because we played
them in High School all the time. I've never heard a team talk more trash and suck so badly. It's tough for me to watch that movie with a straight face as the Titans were only remembered for being in such a bad area of town that night games were prohibited (too many knife attacks, not kidding).

While I did like Sandler as the goofy and likeably mentally challenged Bobby Boucher, I couldn't stand him trying to play the role that Burt Reynolds mastered decades earlier. I just don't buy Sandler as the alpha male tough guy. Call me crazy.

Burt, on the other hand, can't play anything but and does it well leading the Mean Machine against the guards in this football classic.

7W) Invincible

Mike, Longest yard is a great movie.. but I love the recent one as well.
I am going with with Invincible here..

What ? Mark Wahlburg can act? Yes he can..
Some good hitting in this movie, and its got the Disney name attached, so its a feel good one..
And being based on a true story helps as well.

8M) Any Given Sunday

I'm putting Any Given Sunday here for one main reason: the amazing Pacino pregame speech for the Sharks. It probably is #1 or #2 for me for sports movie speeches (possibly second to Hackman in Hoosiers). If you don't remember it, do yourself a favor and rewatch the "inches" speech.

9W) We are Marshall

We are Marshall is a Great Movie.. but I have a good connection to it as a teacher of mine was on the team following the crash..
This movie , is a bit different than the typical, football movie , as it shows a bit more insight into the recruiting, which I was a fan of.

10) The Replacements

I dug "We are Marshall" as well, Wesley. I'm a big sucker for almost anything that's sports related and based on a true story.

Before I get blasted here, I need to say that yes, I have seen
Brian's Song, and no, I didn't like it. I know this puts me in a class of crazy all by my lonesome, but it just honestly didn't do anything for me. I know, I said "almost anything".

The Replacements takes Keanu Reeves out of Bill and Ted's land and actually makes him watchable (a feat I thought only the great Wachowski brothers could manage). It's not a GREAT movie, but it's one you find yourself going "wow, that was much better than I remembered" when you catch it on cable. Plus, I'll sit through pretty much anything Gene Hackman or Orlando Jones is in.

8/27 Draft: Can't miss CFB games in 2009 (all NCAA)

With the College Football slate placed in front of us like a starving refugee looking at a hot juicy steak, we look ahead at the can't miss games of 2009. Taking the BC hat off for just a moment, we look at ALL the CFB games available for consumption, not just BC or ACC games. For the sake of the obvious, no conference championship games, MNC games, etc.

The remote firmly in hand, BCMike has the first selection in 2009. What will it be?

1M) Texas vs. OU (The Red River Shootout), 10/17

Texas had a legitimate beef last year as they beat OU but still
lost out on a tie-breaker to represent the conference as it's BCS contender. You better believe that Texas is still steaming over what happened last year and is out to win over the voters by administering a Texas-sized beat-down of OU. But hold your steer there, fella...there's a Heisman winner QB'ing the other side and Stoops' boys will be one of the best in the nation again in 2009. If I had to watch one game all year, this would be it. Stoops vs. Mack. Sam vs. Colt. OU vs. Texas.

2W) Alabama @ Auburn (Iron Bowl), 11/28

Good call Mike, thats a good one... but I have got to say that the Iron Bowl is a bigger game.. even though this year the red river rivalry will be great.
Ok I HAVE to put this as my first choice.. for minimal reason of me living in this state.

This is a huge Rivalry.. one like I have never seen before in my life..

Although I think Auburn is in a transition period , and Alabama is peaking at this point, believe me there will still be PLENTY of hype to keep you glued to this one.

3M) Virginia Tech vs. Alabama (Chick-fil-A Kickoff Classic at the Georgia Dome), 9/5

I have to say that you're right about 'Bama/Auburn being one of the best rivalries. Ohio State / Michigan might be bigger, but it's not interstate like the Iron Bowl is.

At this point in the season, all of the rankings are simply
guesses...but that being said, there's only one sure-fire top 10 matchup. VT vs. 'Bama. VT has been carrying the ACC flag for several years now for better or for worse. Last year, it was clearly for the worse as the Hokies were embarrassed by LSU, effectively removing all credibility from the conference. It's not often that the football gods give you a chance to put right what once went wrong, but VT has that shot in a couple of weeks here in Atlanta.

4W) Miami @ Florida State, 9/7

Mike, I hope we don't see a repeat of last years Bama vs Clemson.

But I agree I like this early SEC/ACC matchup in ATL

Always focus on Game number 1, and take it one game at
a time.. that's what the coaches preach to you... well when you first game is an in state conference rival.. you dwell on it , day in day out , and every practice is lived for it .. I know a lot of people aren't a fan of the first game being a rivalry.. I like it .

5M) Ohio State @ Penn State, 11/7

You know Wesley, both of those teams are really coming along. While FSU's format is different from a decade ago, I think both FSU and Miami will be much improved in '09. The hatred these teams have for each other always makes for an enjoyable watch. Nice call.

For my selection I'm going to the Midwest. For longer than I care to remember, "THE" Ohio State University has been representing the Big10. The Bucks drew much warranted
criticism for not playing anyone outside of the state of Ohio for years on end, but have, to their credit, fixed that by adding one legitimate OOC opponent this year in USC (however this powerhouse still plays Toledo, New Mexico State, 113th, 144th overall according to Sagarin) and pesky Navy.

The REAL test, however, will be when the Buckeyes take on the Nittany Lions in Happy Valley. Could this be the changing of the guard in the Big10? The winner of this game will very likely be the BCS torch bearer for the Big10, and possibly a MNC participant if Penn State wins as JoePa's boys have a painfully easy schedule (OOC games vs. Akron, Syracuse, Temple, and Eastern Illinois. YIKES!!).

6W) Oklahoma @ Miami, 10/3

You gotta love interdivision games..

This will be a very competitive game. When the Sooners come in town. I imagine that Stoops and company wont necessarily bowl over Miami.. Keep an eye on this game.

7M) Georgia @ Georgia Tech, 11/28

I'd love to see Miami give OU a game, Wesley...it certainly wasn't one last year in Norman.

Living in Atlanta, I get to hear repeatedly about how amazing UGA is on a near constant basis. I give their fans credit, they are rabid if
nothing else. Last year Paul Johnson's crew administered a dose of reality that nothing lasts forever, not even a seven game winning streak vs. The Wreck. UGA fans are of course chalking the game up to a fluke win and are promising victory in Atlanta in late November despite losing starting QB Matthew Stafford and RB Knowshown Moreno to the first round of the NFL draft this past spring. The Tech nerds kids are saying that this is the way it's going to be from now on, and that they're here to stay. Who wins this one will go a LONG way in the polls let alone the State of Georgia as both teams could be in conference championship games the following week.

8W) Southern California @ Ohio State 9/12

Good call on Georgia /Georgia Tech. Love an in state ACC/SEC game.

OSU is showing back up on the list. And they sure do have some proving to do, esp after last year. OSU will return a great QB in Pryor, and USC put a good amt of players into the pros last year.

Expect this to be a very competitive early game

9M)
Oregon @ Boise State, 9/3

I feel like that game should be on VH1: "Great teams of the 90's: Where are they now?". Both of those teams are getting by on their reputations if you ask me.

Who's going to be in the BCS title game this year? Well I can tell you one of the teams for sure, depending on the outcome of this game.

The Broncos start the season out with their toughest, and only ranked opponent in Oregon. Oregon's got a solid squad returning and is a
legitimate top 15 team entering the year in my book. Last year, Boise State administered an upset win of the Ducks at Autzen Stadium. Will the Ducks return the favor this year? If not, get ready to see Boise State in the title game this year. Trust me, it can and will happen unless Oregon stops them early. Don't believe me? Check out their schedule and you tell me who is going to beat them. Maybe when a team starts the year outside of the top 25 can you remove them, but not when they start in the top 15.

10W) BC @ Clemson (O'Rourke - McFadden Trophy), 9/19

Yes, I am a BC fan.. I will admit it.. But to admit that these two arent forming an exciting rivalry would be an understatement. over the past few matches.. it has been VERY close going into OT more often than not. I have to say this is one of the fastest BIG games to watch!

By this time in the season, I would bet that both teams will be ranked in the 20s and I can promise you this, that both teams will have this date circled as a turning point, the question will be , which way will they turn?

BCMike- Although 100% Unintentional, did you seem to notice that no BigEast Teams were in this draft?

Ha! That's funny, Wesley. Didn't even notice that until just now. You also appear to be a closet Miami fan, and we're both apparently intrigued by OU and Bama this year.

Go figure.

And yet all of the pundits say we're pining to get back to the Big East...lol.

Here's the recap:

Wesley drafted: Bama/Auburn, Miami/FSU, OU/Miami, USC/OSU, BC/Clemson

8/26 Draft: Teams that should be given DAS BOOT from D1 football

That's right, we've given you a fair shot to compete at a high level, and this just isn't working out. Here are the teams that should be given the boot from D1A competition:

1W) University of North Texas

Does North Texas have the worst win/loss record of history? No.. but the fact of the matter is that Texas has 50 teams that actually DO compete.

North Texas has a High School Coach and a High School Football Program .

And what the heck is Mean Green? A Carpet Cleaner?

Watch this point be proven when they play Troy on 10/24.. It is going to get ugly.

2M) Kent State University

Listen, I'm not trying to shoot down your hopes and dreams
here, Golden Flashes, but the fact of the matter is that Kent State has been given PLENTY of time to become a legit D1 player--well over 800 games worth. What do you have to show for yourselves? The 3rd lowest active winning percentage in college football. That's while playing in the MAC, for goodness sakes. The only programs lower are FIU and FAU, and they haven't been playing football since 1888. Sorry, but this program should have it's plug pulled.

3W) University of South Carolina

South Carolina.. Although I will give them some credit on packing the stadium.. I am going to have to say that even with "Great" coaches, they dont seem to be able to produce a consistantly winning program. This seems to be the place where all "good" coaches seem to go die..Even boasting a former Heisman winner in George Rogers can't help this team.. They even went a stint of losing 21 games straight.. and thier win that broke this streak over New Mexico State! (Which would have been my number 11 pick) So Congratulations USCe... YOU JUST WENT DAS BOOT!

4M) Temple University

When you get the boot from the BigEast, that's really saying
something. The Owls have finally found another conference in the MAC after staying in NCAA purgatory for a couple years (IND). However, things have gotten better for Temple in recent years since bringing in BC Guy Al Golden (Al's five wins last year were the most for the Temple program since a 7-4 season in 1990), but the cumulative performance since 1990--even including Al's upswing the past two years--is 40-163, a winning percentage of under 20%. Time to put this bird down.

5W) Florida International University

Florida International University. What does that even mean?

It sounds like an online college , an outside of having a gang type brawl with Miami a couple years back the only thing Internationally known about this university is being everyone's homecoming.

6M) Utah State University

Utah State did provide us with NFL Pro-Bowler Chris
Cooley, but past that, the Aggies have offered us precious little else. In the past 28 seasons, what do you think the percentage of those seasons that have been WINNING ones? If you guessed just under 8%, you'd be right. That's less than one winning season a decade. Absolutely brutal. The fact that BYU and the University of Utah are now doing very well, I can't say that it's going to get better before it gets worse...if that's at all possible.

7W) Syracuse University

Do away with the carrier dome.. Does this dome with an air conditioner name even have air conditioning? Similar to Temple, The Big East is even getting wary of thier losing ways.

If Syracuse doesn't change its way soon.. DAS BOOT could be coming!

8M) Duke University

I know, I know..they're getting better, Thaddeus Lewis, blah blah blah. They're still the laughing stock of college football. Anyone who ever says anything about the ACC being bad ALWAYS brings up Duke. "Yeah, but you guys get to play DUKE every year" (even though sadly BC does not). If there's one thing that the NBE (New Big East for those unfamiliar) has proven, it's that there's an argument to be made for a conference of basketball-only schools that play at the highest level...and just field D2 football squads...which is exactly what Duke has been doing for quite some time.

9W) University of Wyoming

Mike I am going to have to disagree on Duke.. I agree thier record isnt all that great overall, but you have got to give them credit for pushing hard to not get DAS BOOT.. especially as of late.

I choose Wyoming here.

Not only one of the ugliest uniforms in the game, but thier actual game play isnt much better.

I had to look up thier "Actual Colors" and found its not just gold and brown.. but Wyoming Prairie Gold and Brown..

With a stadium seating right about at 30k I am guessing you can still find some good group seats on the fifty for the season.

10M) University of Nevada at Las Vegas (UNLV)

What's that? You didn't know UNLV was D1? Apparently neither
do they. I almost went with Indiana here, but seeing as they still have a player in the NFL (former QB Antwaan Randle El), I had to go for Randal Cunningham's alma mater here.

I also considered Northwestern (sorry, Brian), but at least they have a good excuse, playing in a BCS conference. UNLV isn't playing Ohio State, Michigan, and Wisconsin every year. They're in the Mountain West, yet still have been able to suck with ferocity for years. Since '87, UNLV has managed to have a point differential average of over -107 points per season. Add up all of the winning scores, losing scores, you get a differential. Their average is over a hundred negative for the past 22 years. Time to run the Runnin' Rebels off the field...for good.
